Inclement Weather Procedures

We love school, but the safety of our students and staff is our number one priority. When severe weather or emergency conditions arise, here are the steps we will take.

School Closures

The Superintendent is the only person who can close a school. This will only take place if:

1) closure is ordered by an appropriate officer of the provincial government; or
2) the health and/or safety of students or employees is endangered.

We strive to have all schools open every instructional day.

Bus Cancellations

Decisions on bus operation will be made after considering current road conditions and weather forecasts for each busing area. The Director of Transportation will cancel some or all buses for the following reasons:

1) Heavy fog creating reduced visibility situations. If possible, the running of buses will only be delayed until fog conditions improve.
2) Air temperatures in excess of -35 C regardless of wind conditions.
3) Impassable road conditions due to extreme snowfall and blowing snow conditions creating poor visibility.
4) Other weather conditions that render roads unsafe or impassable.

Drivers can cancel their route for safety reasons. If buses are cancelled in the morning, we will make every effort to have those buses run in the afternoon, weather and road conditions permitting.

Parents always have the option to keep their children home during severe weather conditions. We always have the responsibility to make every reasonable effort to bring children, our most precious cargo, safely to and from school. Thank you for choosing HPSD!
