Students across the division had the opportunity to experience many aspects of Indigenous culture throughout June in celebration of Indigenous History Month.
Visiting schools one at a time, our Indigenous Education team worked alongside local Knowledge Keepers to offer students a variety of teachings and activities all related to this year's centralized theme of education, empowerment, and resilience.
A special shout out to Georges P Vanier School's Youth Council for Reconciliation (YCR), who planned the day's activities for their school along with their teacher, Shelby Thierstein, and Indigenous Education Coach Connie Sabo. You all did a great job!
This year's events included storytelling in the tipi, rock teachings and smudging, medicinal plant teachings, traditional games, drum teachings, Métis jigging, and powwow etiquette.
Thank you to everyone who came together to showcase the beauty and resilience of Indigenous culture.
