This is the image for the news article titled HPSD Students Practice Financial SkillsStudents in High Prairie School Division have been busy working with money. As shared by elementary school teacher Jessie Sloan, at E.G. Wahlstrom School, "As part of our updated Wellness curriculum, we've placed a strong emphasis on enhancing financial literacy. Recently, I stumbled upon menus reminiscent of an old-fashioned ice cream parlour."

To complement this discovery, Ms. Sloan crafted a worksheet that prompted students to envision different scenarios involving selecting items from the shop, noting their prices, and calculating the overall cost. Additionally, they were tasked with determining the change they would receive when paying with either a $20 or $50 bill.

Our school division has thoughtfully developed individual money kits, providing students with tangible tools for interactive, hands-on learning experiences.

The children thoroughly enjoyed immersing themselves in role-play scenarios, "purchasing" indulgent treats like double-scooped chocolate ice creams, towering sundaes, and delightful banana splits. Engaging in these mathematical exercises brought them immense joy.

This activity also aligns with the class's current mathematics unit which focuses on the fundamentals of addition and subtraction.
