Pink Shirt Day is a movement which began at a Nova Scotian school in 2007 when a student received threats for wearing a pink shirt to school.
After witnessing the attack, two students decided to take action by purchasing pink T-shirts and generating support through school staff and social media. The shirts were gone in minutes, and the next day, about 75% of students wore pink to school.
Now, sixteen years later, Pink Shirt Day is recognized by over 110 countries worldwide and
has generated over $2,800,000 for youth anti-bullying programs throughout Western Canada.
As a bystander, it is important to know what to do if you see someone being bullied:
-Tell a teacher, coach, or counsellor,
-Move toward or next to the victim,
-Use your voice - say "stop",
-Befriend the victim,
-Lead the victim away from the situation.
The High Prairie School Division takes instances of bullying very seriously. Contact your school's administration if your child is experiencing bullying. Additionally, each school has a wellness coach that students may access for support.
