High Prairie School Division is pleased to announce Cara Haubrich of C.J. Schurter School as our zone candidate for the 2022 Edwin Parr award. The Edwin Parr award is given to a first-year teacher who goes above and beyond in the duties normally expected of a teacher.
Cara's quest for knowledge and self-improvement is one of her strengths. She is extremely reflective and seeks and applies feedback from her colleagues, her mentor teacher, our Learning Support Teachers, and administrators. Cara embraces vulnerability and has opened her classroom for other staff to observe her lessons, which speaks to her confidence level and the value she puts on learning and peer collaboration. She has also visited other classrooms to learn from her colleagues. Cara has demonstrated excellent leadership skills and has facilitated many Professional Learning Community meetings within our school and among grade 2 teachers in our School Division. She facilitates effectively, ensuring everyone has a voice and stays focused on what is best for students. She is very well respected by her peers.
Cara's relationships with the students in her grade 2 class are based on mutual trust, respect and joy. She celebrates each child. Cara's ability to differentiate her instruction to meet the needs of each student is incredible. She consistently uses formative assessment to guide her teaching and to communicate with her students and parents about progress and next steps. She has very high expectations for her students and helps them believe in themselves as much as she believes in them. One of the most powerful activities Cara implemented in her classroom is Affirmations. Before beginning a difficult task, she leads her students in reciting affirmations to set them up with the confidence and growth mindset they need to accomplish their goals. Many teachers in our school have adopted this practice after Cara shared it.
Cara surpasses expectations in the TQS, and our division is better with her as a part of it. Her students have received an exemplary education and have become kinder, more confident people due to her teaching. Cara, thank you for your dedication and commitment to quality public education.
